Settings: Station 3 (The Wheel in Space)

Another season finale, another new companion. This story is, however, the first time that we have visited a free-floating space station rather than being on a world of some kind, and it’s the first time in a while that we haven’t been on Earth. It’s another story that’s mostly missing and has yet to be animated, although there is an official telesnap reconstruction that’s easier to find than the unofficial ones usually are. While this is usually regarded as a middling story at best, at least it’s a different setting than we’ve had before, albeit one that feels a little bit Star Trek…

Where & When

Most of the story takes place on a space station orbiting the Sun between Earth and Venus. No date is given in the serial, although it’s heavily implied to be the mid to late 21st century, when humans have started colonising the solar system, but have yet to develop faster-than-light travel. Any more specific date that we pick will end up contradicting at least one other story somewhere. A later audio story, however, indicated that Zoe joined the TARDIS crew in 2079 and, for lack of anything better, this date is now often accepted as canon.
